Indigenous Story
Christina Benty, MA, is of Acadian and Irish descent, her Canadian settler heritage hails from Ontario and she holds a deep sense of place and home in Prince Edward Island where her father was born. She has lived all across the 49th parallel of Turtle Island (North America), including Kitchener, Newfoundland and all over British Columbia. She currently calls Golden, BC home, the unceded territory and ancestral lands of the Ktunaxa and Shuswap peoples and the Columbia River Metis. She is a mother to three and a grandmother to two, and her favourite recollection of her own grandmother, who was famous for her biscuits, and giggled with a crooked smile is how to cook instinctively, always taking a little bit of this with a little bit of that, and trusting and loving the process.

Speak to Lead
Are you a woman considering a leadership role in local government?
We hope your answer is YES!
We invite you to enjoy our SPEAK to Lead leadership masterclass with Charlene SanJenko and Christina Benty – former two-term Mayor of Golden, British Columbia.
Know Your Path - Walk it. Dance it!
Call me crazy, but I love Mondays!
I get excited about the start of the day, the week, the month, the season, and the year.
I am especially eager when the fall rolls around because it always symbolizes the season of learning with the return of both students and routine. So this fall, I was surprised to find my energy and enthusiasm waning. Like a tire with a slow leak, I felt flat and uninspired.
Great Leaders Lead Their Own Lives, PowHERfully, First!
There is a rule of thumb for comedians: “Get off the stage while they are still laughing”.
For politicians, maybe it should be “Get off the stage while you are still laughing”! After almost twelve years in local government, two terms on council and two terms as mayor, I chose to retire while I still loved what I did. My gut instinct led me into the role, and this Fall, it told me that it was time to move on. I have learned a thing or two over my tenure, not only about leading a community but more importantly, about leading my own life. How you really are in your private life is how you show up in your public life. The two are inseparably intertwined. If you truly want to be a leader, then you better lead your own life first.
Media
I love having meaningful conversations for a living. I am committed to bringing “love to gov”, meaning that I help facilitate conversations designed to bring about a kinder, wiser, and more intentional leadership mindset in local government. I will work as hard as you. There is nowhere I won’t go, no conversation too uncomfortable to be had. I take my work seriously and know how to have fun while I do it.
