GATHER with Paige Bethmann
Integrating Relational Changemaking with the Creative Process of Filmmaking
GATHER is a community of Indigenous and non-Indigenous changemakers coming together on a consistent basis to learn, heal, and grow - together - and a digital storytelling platform that tracks these raw, real, and authentic conversations and tells the story of the wisdom gathered for a purpose throughout this individual and collective journey of expansion.
WHO is Paige Bethmann?
Paige Bethmann is a Haudenosaunee director and producer based on the ancestral lands of the Wašiw, Numu, and Newe or present day Reno, Nevada. Over the last 10 years, Paige has worked in non-fiction television for various digital and broadcast networks such as Vox Media, Facebook, YouTube Originals, USA and NBC. Her latest project, the Emmy-nominated series “Glad You Asked,” centered around issues of racial injustice and premiered in July 2021.
Paige graduated cum laude from Ithaca College with a bachelor’s degree in Film, Television, and Radio. Paige is a Logan Non-Fiction Fellow and is currently in production on her first feature documentary Remaining Native which follows a young Native American athlete who retraces the footsteps of his great grandfather’s escape from Indian Boarding Schools.
Paige believes that braiding for impact is so important at this time because we have become so accustomed to working and changemaking at a distance from one another - literally and figuratively. Tasks are being completed from our separate corners of the globe and stories are being told by people that aren’t fully connected to them.
To Paige, braiding for impact means building community around a project or initiative and finding the alignment between everyone involved. She believes it makes the difference between simply creating something and creating something that is meant to uplift and embrace all who engage with it.
Why is this conversation important?
The creative process is not a one way street, it’s a gathering, and this work is more than just ‘work,’ it’s personal. Paige's hope is to build reciprocal relationships with everyone who supports her film and hopes to see the film as a changemaking force - impacting the way the history of Indian Boarding schools is taught in schools, creating spaces of hope that could lead to healing, and amplify the excellence of Indigenous people.
