For those of you who have read the Year of YES by Shonda Rhimes, I believe you’ll resonate with Sue Spencer and her story quite nicely.
Sue Spencer is a Competitive Athlete, Mom, Grandma, Friend, Mentor, Facilitator, and Practitioner of Kindness who believes that by saying YES to new opportunities, we open ourselves up to life’s possibilities that are endless.
What is your ultimate dream or your mission and where you’d like to take it?
My ultimate dream is to use weightlifting as my vehicle to show women of all ages that you can achieve anything you set your mind to if you really want it. My first goal is to compete at the 2017 World Masters Games and inspire others along this journey. I plan to continue to compete and collect and share the amazing stories of the women I meet along the way – like-minded souls who also embrace the belief that it is never too late to dare to have a Fearless Spirit. There is a book waiting to be written about women who have the courage to step out, step up, and lift up, achieving what they never dreamed possible until later in life.
One thing that you feel has been most pivotal or useful thus far in your journey
What has been the most pivotal in my journey has been saying YES to the opportunity to work with a personal trainer. It was not something I had planned to do in advance, but taking advantage of that one offered opportunity opened up a whole world of possibilities and with it a realization (and a remembering) of my strong(est) Self.
What would you like women to most understand or consider – on a higher level – with regards to your role and your mission?
I would like women to understand or consider that all of us are most limited by our own beliefs – beliefs of who we are, what we are capable of and what we can achieve. We need be willing to see past those limiting beliefs and accept the abilities that others see in us and take the chance to act on those abilities, allow ourselves to become our truest most PowHERful selves.
What would be your top three tips for women regarding walking their talk and a courageously approaching to is most important to them?
- Believe that you are capable of anything you choose to do. Don’t be afraid to ASK for what you need.
- Believe that there is a whole world of people out there waiting for you to ASK for their help.
Describe collaboration and what does it look like/feels like on the ground – how does it show up in your life?
Collaboration for me is the opportunity to work with the people in my life towards my goals. I have the opportunity to work with some very talented professionals who are developing a name for themselves in their chosen field. I am mindful that the opportunities that come across my path are a gift, and I can support my own growth and development while also supporting the opportunity for the professional growth and development of the people I work with ultimately creating a win-win. It always involves gratitude and appreciation for time and expertise shared.
What does giving back (fulfillment) look like to you?
Fulfillment is being able to share my story in a positive light that inspires others to step out of their comfort zone and dare to try something different than their “normal”. I feel fulfilled and complete when I can positively set an example to others and am able to reach out a hand to help someone else move forward to achieve their goal.
