PowHERtalks Calgary | Introducing Filomena May

Filomena May | PowHERhousePowHERhouse is pleased to welcome Filomena May, Featured Guest Speaker, PowHERtalks Calgary on October 2, 2016.

Filomena May began her career as a financial advisor at just 24 years of age, a couple years after graduating from the University of Calgary. She went on to start her own company, Filo Financial Solutions within an independent investment firm, to expanding her practice at Raymond James Ltd.

Filomena has overcome many obstacles to beat the odds in an industry where her average colleague is a 55-year old male.  At the beginning of her career, she worked through the rejection of being told she would never make it and turned down from a management position when it was discovered that she was expecting a child, even though she was a top-quartile advisor.

She’s lived through these hurdles – and more – questioning why she was caught-up with all of it, but now understands that it was these experiences that led her to a tenacious attitude complemented by dedication and persistence which helped her to build a successful practice, deeply conscious of the importance of women’s empowerment not only in business but also in their finances.

In terms of doing what she does in an impactful and holistic way, Filomena says, “Picking investments and portfolio allocations are the easy part; getting to the root of what drives clients and their relationship with money is one of the most intimate discussions you will ever have.”  Creating a safe, nurturing and respectful environment requires the ability to build trust, a strength and gift that Filomena wants to give back to her community.

One area that she is passionate about is helping women going through a marriage breakdown.  Having experienced divorce first-hand and the financial hoops and emotional ups and downs, Filomena knows that surviving divorce and coming out the other side feeling empowered rather than broken are not something that can be passed along by reading a book.  Taking her clients from the unknown to developing a roadmap that creates understanding and confidence around their finances, their future and their life are what Filomena takes pride in.

Filomena owns the attitude of not fearing failure when it comes to her personal life and pushes the boundaries of growth.  She has conquered losing 90 pounds and running two half marathons.  She enjoys skiing, travelling, regularly practicing yoga, and attending personal development courses with her partner.  Filomena also been an active member in her community since her early teens, including sitting on the board of directors of her cultural society for the past 14 years.

She cherishes being a mother to her 8-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son who have taught and inspired her to be the best she can be.
