The Power of Facial Oils

The Power of Facial Oils ~ and the Top 5 Reasons to Start Using Them!

For years we have been sold on oil-combating face washes, makeups and drying creams.  PowHERhouse Natural Skincare Editor, Jennifer Erin says, “If only we knew then that the only true way to fight oil is with oil!”

“As a natural beauty product creator, I always get asked, ‘Do you have anything to get rid of my oily skin?’  This is then followed with me asking them what products they have tried and what products they are currently using. I find 9 times out of 10, their answer is an oil-free face wash, usually containing Salicylic Acid. Well ladies, have I got an exciting new option for you…”

FACIAL OILS.

Facial oils are the newest and most effective products to reduce the effects of an over-active sebaceous system for the glowing skin you’ve always wanted. Here are my top 5 reasons why you should give them a try:

1.    Fight Oil with Oil ~ Scrubs, harsh soaps and other drastic treatments that strip off your topmost lipid barrier may aggravate a blemish problem by eliminating the protection your skin needs and by encouraging your skin to produce more oil – which is exactly the thing you are trying to get rid of! By applying fatty acids (olive oil, coconut oil, tamanu oil, avocado oil, hemp seed oil, to name a few), this helps to alleviate breakouts by re-stabilizing the lipid barrier which helps to restore anti-microbial activity on the skin’s surface. Because lipids dissolve lipids, oils actually break up congestion at the source, making it a huge benefit to busting through that oily residue.

2.    Face oils for Anti-aging ~  Besides protecting the lipid barrier, oils put a stop to oxidative damage. Why does this matter? WRINKLES, honey! When we expose our skin to the natural sunlight, lipids undergo a process called peroxidation. These peroxidized lipids lose their protective barrier ability, and little gaps start to form in the lipid matrix which translates into sallow skin and formation of dreaded wrinkles.

3.     Super Charged Absorption ~ Think of applying facial oil as a super sidekick for your anti-aging cream.  Skincare experts say that if you apply an oil before your anti-aging cream, the oil molecules behave like tiny Trojan horses, tricking the skin into letting active ingredients—like retinol, glycolic acid, and vitamin C—deeper into the skin and closer to the collagen-producing fibroblasts – all without irritating the surface. Totally legit info!

4.     A Little Goes a Long Way ~ Unlike creams, oils have a more viscous makeup which in turn gives you product longevity and a few less trips to your local beauty supply spot.

5.    You Get What You Pay For ~ Don’t be afraid to spend extra on a good quality oil. Avoid any products with mineral oil (petroleum, paraffin, paraffin oil and propylene glycol) as an ingredient.  I follow a blog called Growing Up Herbal, and here’s what the author had to say about it, “Mineral oil is meant to moisturize your skin. At least that’s what it’s advertised to do.  It coats your skin like wax or plastic wrap, which interferes with the skin’s ability to excrete toxins, and instead of holding moisture into the skin, it pulls moisture out of your skin. All of that leads to dry skin and clogged pores.  The molecules of the oil are so large that your skin has a hard time absorbing them, but once it does it can cause a good amount of internal problems.  Studies have shown it to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins in the intestinal tract once the liver breaks it down, cause abnormal hormonal issues resulting in female reproductive problems, cause pre-mature aging due to lack of oxygen to the skin and slowed cell development, lead to a type of pneumonia called lipoid pneumonia, as well as causing kidney damage… just to name a few.”

I have a facial oil in my line called Lotus Elixir.  It is a luxurious blend of Madagascar Tamanu, Organic Avocado, Petitgrain, Rose Geranium, Pink Lotus, Palmarosa & Rosewood Essential oils. The feedback I have recieved from it is blowing my mind – everything to refining pores, diminishing wrinkles, healing acne scars, and returning over pigmented skin to its normal color, it does it all.

Whatever oils you decide to use on your face, just make sure you do your research, and don’t be afraid!  You get what you pay for.
