How does giving back to community make one rich?
Spending my time making a difference in my community filled me up, fueled me and gave me something money can’t buy…
I am referring to the feeling that giving back has had on my heart. You can’t put a price on your heart, but you sure can feel with your heart.
I remember being in a very dark place in my life only a few years back. I battled with what we all know to be transitional life changes, and I never felt so lost, alone and afraid.
I mean, what was I missing? And where was this feeling coming from?
- I had (lots) of money in my bank;
- I owned my own condo;
- I was in love; and,
- I was healthy.
I remember taking a step back and pressing pause on my social life and my business to reassess my unsettling emotions.
It was at this time that I decided to do some volunteer work and found myself giving back to the community.
I participated in a couple of food drives, attended charity meet-ups, organized a few charity events, and in the process encouraged others to do the same.
This went on for about a year, and I have to admit, the experience was unlike anything I had ever experienced before.
I felt my heart swell with riches. And over time, I became…
Rich with love.
Rich with passion.
Rich with friendship.
Rich with confidence.
And rich with purpose.
In giving back and volunteering my time to a cause that I felt connected to, I became the best version of me.
I made some amazing connections and friendships with people who have the same heart; people who I have grown very close with to this very day.
I became a person I love, and I realized the value and impact I have in this world.
It occurred to me that I was not in alignment with who I aspired to be in this lifetime – in my relationships and in my business – and this changed everything for me.
In the months following, I sold my business and did some soul searching. I re-evaluated my friendships and the person and friend I wanted to be.
I have never been so confident in my purpose and the impact I want to create in my community, all because I made the decision to help someone.
When you take the time to help another person, you end up helping yourself.
As we enter into the holiday season, I encourage you to to take yourself out of the equation and surrender to what is. Life is busy and yes, we are always tackling our list of “things to do,” but those things never go away.
If you are looking for answers, looking for a place to belong, or yearning to simply feel GOOD, find some place or an opportunity where you can give back and volunteer your time and efforts.
I promise, you will find yourself.
