AMPLIFY: Leadership Insights by Jodi Fichtner
Philanthropy. CSR. ESG. Social Purpose. An evolution of different ways of doing business. A concept that I discovered a number of years ago and still circle back to today was introduced in 2011 by Professor Michael E. Porter and Mark Kramer, in their Harvard Business Review article, Creating Shared Value.
The authors speak to the synergy between business and society: “what is good for business can actually create a more sustainable and prosperous society; and what is good for society, turns out to be essential to create competitive businesses”. It is based on this Shared Value concept that the following initiative was born.
Everyone Loves a Win/Win!
Coast organizations offer an innovative way to support affordable housing and build community financial wellness
With long-term visions aligned to support a healthy and vibrant community, Sunshine Coast Community Services Society (SCCSS) and Sunshine Coast Credit Union (SCCU) share a rich history of partnering together for local social impact. Our shared value initiative followed in these same footsteps and aimed to build affordable housing and community financial wellness at the same time.
A capital campaign was launched by Sunshine Coast Community Services Society for Building Together, a milestone community project that aims to provide 34 units of affordable housing for women and children alongside a redeveloped Community Services hub.
Sunshine Coast Credit Union donated $50,000 to the project on behalf of its members, while also reserving an additional $25,000 more to be allocated through a Shared Value initiative.
Both organizations came together to develop a plan that would deliver a win for all. The result was a campaign that increased community financial wellness, laid a foundation for 100 new advisory conversations, and activated an additional $25,000 to the Building Together project.
